World AIDS Day 2023: Theme, Vaccine, History, Significance and Key facts

World AIDS Day Observed on the 1st of December every year, World AIDS Day calls for greater awareness and support for people living with HIV. It is also a day to remember those who have died from AIDS. The event encourages individuals and governments to unite against HIV and AIDS. World AIDS Day was established by the World Health Organization in 1988.

It has become a global day of observance every year. It focuses on the global impact of HIV AIDS and on eliminating inequities. It is a reminder of the need to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. The plan leverages scientific advances in HIV treatment and prevention. It also focuses on improving access to HIV treatment and prevention services  for all people living with HIV.

World AIDS Day theme

The United States World AIDS Day theme for 2023 is, "Let communities lead". The theme recognizes the impact communities have had on the HIV response and global health. It also highlights the importance of community leadership in the fight against HIV.

World AIDS Day Celebration

A red ribbon is a universal symbol of support for people living with HIV. Many individuals wear the ribbon to show their commitment to  millions of people worldwide who are affected by the HIV epidemic. Approximately 37 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2020. It also estimates that 680,000 people will die from HIV-related causes.

Communities around the globe hold a variety of activities on World AIDS Vaccine Day to raise awareness for AIDS vaccines These activities educate communities about HIV prevention and bring attention to the ways in which people can be a part of the international effort  to stem this disease As per WHO, HIV remains a major global public health issue It has claimed 40.1 million lives so far with ongoing transmission in all countries globally There were an estimated 38.4 million people living with HIV at the end of 2021 Of these, 38.4 million, 25.6 million are in the WHO African region.
